The Oregon State Beavers and North Carolina Tar Heels have already clinched a berth in the 2018 College World Series, and more teams will join them Sunday as the NCAA tournament super regionals continue.

Six games are spread throughout Sunday afternoon and into the evening. By the time the action concludes, the bulk of the eight-team CWS field is likely to be set.

Here’s a look at the results from Sunday and brief recap for each game as it wraps up. The full bracket is available

Mississippi State exploded for four runs in the top half of the 11th inning to secure its spot in the College World Series.

The ninth inning is when everything went haywire for both teams. Mississippi State started the frame with three runs to take a 6-3 lead.

Knowing its season was on the line with three outs to play, Vanderbilt responded with a solo homer from Pat DeMarco that made it a two-run game. Ethan Paul set up extra innings with a game-tying blast off Bulldogs reliever Riley Self.

After the double elimination format of the regional round, the super regionals pit two teams against each other in a best of three series at eight super regional sites spread across the country. The first four games will play out on Friday, the next few on Saturday, then Sunday and possibly Monday will mop up the rest of the field.

Regional hosts Stanford, Clemson, Florida State, Ole Miss, and East Carolina are among those notably left out of the super regional round, after dropping their hosting duties this past weekend. Vanderbilt and Cal State Fullerton are playing with house money, then, after playing their way through the Clemson and Stanford regionals, respectively.

The Gamecocks and the Buckeyes got things started in the regional yesterday with an intense game that ultimately resulted in a Carolina victory. Both teams missed plenty of opportunities and the Gamecocks trailed until they took the lead on a 3-run homer from Danny Blair. South Carolina won 8-3 and advanced to the winners bracket, where they’ll face East Carolina. Ohio State will play in the losers bracket against UNCW.

Both the Buckeyes and the Seahawks lost their opening game on Friday, so they’ll face each other in an elimination game today. The loser of this game will go home and the winner will play the loser of Game 4 in another elimination game Sunday at noon.

Both higher seeds won their opening games on Friday and today’s matchup between them should be a good one. The winning team will be only one win away from advancing to the Super Regional round and will play the winner of Sunday’s elimination game in the second game of the day tomorrow. The loser of today’s game will play in an elimination game tomorrow against the winner of Game 3.

No. 3 national seed Oregon State began its road in the 2018 NCAA baseball tournament with a 9-3 victory against Northwestern State on Friday night in the second game of the Corvallis Regional.

After beating Canisius 10-1 in the first round of their NCAA baseball regional, the Gophers play UCLA.

The winning team advances to Sunday’s championship in the double-elimination tournament, and will have two tries to win one game. (A final game will be played Monday, if necessary.) Canisius plays Gonzaga in the losers’ bracket on Saturday afternoon.

LSU’s run to Omaha kicks into overdrive on Friday when the No. 2 seed Tigers meet No. 3 San Diego State in the opening game of the Corvallis Regional at 3 p.m. CT.

The Tigers enter the postseason with a 37-24 overall mark while San Diego State is 39-19 on the year.

The Tiger pitching staff is down two starters with A.J. Labas and Ma’Khail Hilliard doubtful for any action this weekend.

That left Paul Mainieri with a decision to make, and the headman named sophomore left-hander Nick Bush the starter for today’s game.

Bush (1-1, 3.16 ERA) has started four games and made 19 relief appearances on the season. His most recent start was in the conference tournament when he went three innings, allowing two runs – earned – on six hits in the 8-5 win over Mississippi State that helped push the Tigers off the Field of 64 bubble.

“Both of them (Zack Hess and Bush) were going to start the first two games,” Mainieri told reporters before the team departed for the cross-country trip. “So, in my mind, it really didn’t matter in which order … I thought Bush would be more fresh and ready to go.”

Mainieri said he was not saving Hess (7-5, 4.43 ERA) for a potential matchup against top seed Oregon State, who squares off against No. 4 seed Northwestern State late Friday. Instead, it came down to the extra work Hess received last week in the SEC Tournament where he threw 147 pitches including 97 on Saturday against Arkansas.

LSU’s baseball team wants to make it a habit, but a few of the Tigers admitted earlier this week they don’t mind being an underdog when they open action in the NCAA Witness Protection Regional.

If you’re reading this and want to drive to see the Tigers open regional action on Friday at 3 p.m. CT vs. San Diego State, you’re too late to get to Corvallis, Oregon, home of regional host Oregon State.

It’s a 38-hour drive and about 2,475 miles from Baton Rouge to Goss Stadium, Oregon State’s ancient crackerbox built in 1907 that seats a cozy 3,300 fans.

Ohio State vs. South Carolina

Ohio State and South Carolina are meeting in the 2018 NCAA Baseball Tournament this Friday, June 1. Ohio State, a No. 3 seed, is looking to knock off second-seeded South Carolina in the Greenville Regional. Find the score, live updates and more below.

Last season the SEC had two teams in the World Series championship while the Big 10 hasn’t advanced out of a regional since 2014. So can Ohio State buck the Big 10 trend or will fall to perennial power South Carolina? The Buckeyes will see if they can match the Gamecocks at 2 p.m. Friday in the Greenville Regional.

While the Big 10 has some strong teams, top the bottom it can’t stack up with strength of the SEC and one of the strongest teams in the conference is South Carolina.

The Gamecocks boast a solid .274 batting average as a team led by Madison Stokes (.342, 40 RBIs and 10 home runs), Justin Row (.338, six home runs), LT Tolbert (.320, 49 RBIs, six home runs and nine steals) and Jonah Bride (.302).

But the Buckeyes swing a strong stick with the No. 50 batting average in the nation (.287). Noah McGowen (.359, 55 RBIs and nine home runs), Kobie Foppe (.344 and eight steals), Dominic Canzone (.329, four home runs and 15 steals) and Tyler Cowles (.327, 49 RBIs and eight home runs) are the big bats in the lineup, but Ohio State can go deeper than just those four.

South Carolina sends Cody Morris (7-3, 3.80 ERA) while Ohio State will trot out Connor Curtis (7-4, 3.81). Morris recorded 76 strikeouts and 26 walks on the season to Curtis’ 73 and 29.

The Buckeyes have one of the best closers in the nation with a 1.49 ERA and 15 saves, but the question is can Ohio State give him the ball in the ninth inning for the win. If so, the game goes to the Buckeyes.

But the Gamecocks bullpen goes much deeper with the likes of Sawyer Bridges (1.29), TJ Shook (2.33) and Gage Hinson (3.18).

Ole Miss baseball was back in action Saturday in Hoover, Alabama. The Rebels came into Saturday off a Friday win over Auburn and advanced to the semis where they would face the Texas A&M Aggies. The Aggies came into the semifinals game off a win over Auburn. The match-up was the fourth meeting between the Rebels and the Aggies going back to the regular season weekend series which saw the Rebels take two games from A&M.

After 3 scoreless innings Saturday the Rebels jumped on the board first with 2 runs in the top of the 4th. The Rebels maintained the 2-0 lead thru the top of the 8th inning when A&M tried to rally back with 1 run in the bottom of the 8th. The Aggies couldn’t produce any further and the Rebels picked up the huge 2-1 win.

After losing their opening game of the double-elimination tournament, the Rebels rallied to win three straight contests behind stout pitching. Per the Clarion-Ledger’s Antonio Morales, they will send sophomore Houston Roth to the mound with hopes of capturing their first conference tournament title since 2006.

Fog forced LSU to finalize its 11-0 victory over top-seeded Florida on Saturday. Mother Nature again interfered later that day, when a rain delay interrupted the Tigers’ 2-1 semifinal triumph over the Razorbacks. Having persevered through the elements, the reigning champions can cement their sixth SEC title in 11 years.

Of course, the win was huge for the Rebels who are headed into Championship Sunday to face the LSU Tigers for the SEC Tourney Championship. The Rebels took 2 of 3 from LSU during the regular season weekend series. For now we look at Saturday’s win by the numbers.

South Carolina vs Kentucky

South Carolina will battle No. 9 Kentucky in the the elements in Lexington this weekend, a three-game SEC series that will be played in poor April weather that does not plan to reach any higher than 46 degrees with chances of rain and snow.

South Carolina suffered a blowout loss to UNC on Tuesday to drop their record to 17-12 (4-5 SEC). The Gamecocks will stay on the road this weekend as they face Kentucky at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The Gamecocks have historically had the upper hand against Kentucky, with a 51-39 lead in the overall series, but the Wildcats have won the season series three of the last four years and Carolina hasn’t won a series in Lexington since 2009.

At only three weekends in, it’s early enough in the SEC season that most of the conference is bunched together in the standings. However a couple of teams have started to stand out, notably Florida and Georgia, the latter of which was absolutely not expected to be atop the standings for any significant amount of time this season. Meanwhile, South Carolina is in 5th in the SEC East, while Kentucky is last in the division.

The Wildcats are 20-9 (3-6 SEC) and are a top ten team in several polls despite their struggles in the early part of the SEC schedule. Kentucky had a hot start to the season, but began conference play by getting swept by a top ten Arkansas team. The Wildcats seemed to be getting back on track with a series win against Auburn the next week, but dropped last weekend’s series to Alabama to fall to last place in the SEC East.
